Chennai: Senior IPS Officer Suspended Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

A Vishaka committee enquiry found plausibility in the sexual harassment allegations against the serving Joint Commissioner of Police(North Zone), Greater Chennai Traffic Police.

Chennai:A Joint Commissioner(North Zone) of Greater Chennai Traffic Police, has been suspended following a sexual harassment complaint by a woman police official, sources said.

An official complaint against the suspended official was lodged at the office of the Director General of Police. The same was forwarded for an enquiry by the state police top brass.

Sources said a Vishaka Committee was constituted with Civil Supplies CID DGP Seema Agarwal, leading it to go into the complaint. The committee's preliminary probe indicated that the allegations are plausible. Based on the findings, a report has been submitted to the state police chief, Shankar Jiwal.

The DGP, has subsequently, recommended suspension of the senior IPS officer in connection with the incident.

The top cop has also recommended departmental enquiry disciplinary proceedings against the IPS officer and it will take its due course.

The suspended official had earlier worked in various capacities in the Greater Chennai Police including the Traffic Wing.

It is also learnt that the Chennai Police may lodge a criminal complaint against the senior official.

A source said the department was seeking legal opinion on registering a case against the official. It is learnt that another woman police official has also reportedly filed a separate complaint against the suspended official, Mahesh Kumar.
