Kottayam: Police on Wednesday arrested five students from Gandhinagar School of Government Nursing College in Kerala's Kottayam for allegedly subjecting junior students to severe ragging.

The students were arrested following a complaint filed by first-year students who complained that the accused subjected them to brutal ragging over the past three months. According to the complaint, senior students inflicted physical harm using tools such as compasses and dumbbells, causing injuries to the victims. The ragging included disturbing acts such as hanging dumbbells on the private parts of the students, the complaint read.
The matter came to light after the father of one of the victims lodged a formal complaint. A police official said that as part of the initial investigation, the college authorities suspended five students involved in the incident. The college principal, Lini Joseph, confirmed the suspension and stated that the Anti-Ragging Committee would take further action.
“Before this, no complaints about ragging in the hostel had been raised. The college has taken preventive measures, issuing a circular against ragging and ensuring increased vigilance on the campus” she added. The hostel warden is said to have been present until 10 PM to monitor the situation.
A special investigation committee has been formed to probe the incident, and the case is being handled by Gandhinagar police station's SHO, T. Sreejith. The college management has assured that strict action will follow based on the ongoing investigation.
