New Delhi:Patparganj seat, a stronghold of the Aam Aadmi Party in the national capital, went into the BJP's kitty as the saffron party candidate Ravinder Singh Negi (Ravi Negi) won it by over 28000 votes against online educator turned AAP politician Avadh Ojha.
Negi polled 74060 votes while Ojha got 45988. Congress' Anil Kumar was at a distant third with 16549 votes to his name. Negi, 45, is currently an MCD councillor from Vinod Nagar, which is part of the Patparganj constituency.
Speaking to the media after his win, Negi termed it a "victory of Prime Minister Narendra Modi" and thanked the party leadership for giving him the opportunity.
"This is PM Modi's victory as his blessings were with all the candidates. This victory is because of the way the PM explained to the people of Delhi why it was important to remove 'aapda'. I thank the party leadership,'' Negi told reporters.
Patparganj used to be the assembly constituency of Delhi's former Chief Minister and AAP leader Manish Sisodia but this time, AAP had fielded Avadh Ojha, who recently joined the party. This constituency witnessed intense campaigning from all three parties with leaders like Arvind Kejriwal and Rahul Gandhi both campaigning for their candidates.
Speaking after he lost the polls, Ojha said he was happy with the second position in the keenly contested election. The popular online educator-turned-politician expressed optimism despite the defeat.
"Winning or losing is nothing. This was my first political innings, and I secured the second position. I am very happy with this achievement," he said.
