Kolkata: Aggrieved junior doctors and nurses went on with 'cease work' agitation at state-owned Sagore Dutta Hospital in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Saturday. The 'cease work' is in protest against the assault on staffers by the patient's relatives.
The hospital staffers in Kamarhati on the northern fringes of the city began the 'cease work' protest late on Friday. The situation turned worse after a patient died while undergoing treatment in the hospital. The patient party allegedly beat up the staff alleging that the death was due to negligence. The incident left three junior doctors and three nurses and healthcare workers injured.
Immediately after the incident, junior doctors and nurses subsequently went for a 'cease work' stir demanding enhancement of security in the hospitals.
The deceased patient's family claimed that they brought the patient to the hospital on Friday but she was not provided any treatment resulting to her death.
Thirty-six-year-old Ranjana Sou was taken to Kamarhati's Sagore Dutta Hospital at 5:30 pm after developing respiratory problems. She had been suffering from fever for four to five days. Allegedly, she did not receive any treatment after admission. A high-risk consent signature was obtained by the hospital from the patient's relatives on the bed ticket.
The patient was then referred to the CCU as her condition worsened. CPR is also given to her. At that time the person who was giving CPR was stopped by the family members.
Also, family members of the patient have also been accused of molesting three female doctors and hurling bottles at them. Doctors and hospital workers were then allegedly beaten up in front of the police, who were outnumbered.
The health workers of the affected hospital complained that after the death of the patient, the family got into tiff with the doctors. The doctors were pushed and shoved and two health workers were injured in the process.
Even a cop sustained injuries. According to police sources, while trying to calm the situation, one of their staff was injured.
