Lausanne (Switzerland): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach and FIH President Tayyab Ikram on Thursday announced the Paris Olympics 2024 schedule for the hockey event during a ceremony held at the Olympic House. The discipline will be held between 27 July to 9 August.
The Indian men’s hockey team will commence its campaign against New Zealand on July 27. The fourth-ranked Indian men's team are placed in Pool B alongside reigning Olympic champions Belgium (world No. 2), Australia (world No. 5), Argentina (world No. 7), New Zealand (world No. 10) and Ireland (world No. 12).
The Indian hockey team had qualified for the one of the biggest sporting event by clinching a gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games. They will face reigning champions Belgium on August 1 and Tokyo Olympics 2020 silver medalists Australia on the next day.
The Indian women’s hockey team won’t feature at the Paris 2024 Olympics after failing to secure a berth at the qualifying tournament in Ranchi.
Teams will play each other once in the group stage and the top four from each pool will progress to the quarter-finals. The hockey matches will be played at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium in Colombes in the capital city of France - Paris. A total of 12 men’s and women’s national teams each will compete to clinch the medals.
Both men’s and women’s hockey tournaments are going to kick off on July 27 while the Great Britain will square off against Spain in the men’s Pool A game in an all-European affair in the opening match of the event. The women’s competition will begin on the same evening with silver medalists of the previous edition, Argentina, beginning their quest to go one step further this time, against the United States of America (USA) in the women’s Pool B encounter.
The league stages in both tournaments will be played till 3 August, followed by knockout matches starting 4 August. The men’s medal matches will be played on 8 August, followed by medal matches for the women’s tournament on 9 August.
