Fact Check
Does mustard oil have pain-relieving properties?
Yes, to an extent. Mustard oil can provide temporary relief for muscle stiffness and minor joint pain. It has warming properties that may soothe discomfort when massaged into the skin. The oil contains allyl isothiocyanate, which helps improve blood flow and affects pain receptors. While some animal studies suggest it can reduce pain, we need more research on humans. Mustard oil also contains ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), an omega-3 fatty acid that may reduce inflammation, especially in conditions like arthritis. However, prolonged use on the skin can cause burns, so caution is necessary.
Can ajwain, methi, cloves, and garlic reduce pain when applied topically?
Not really. There’s no solid scientific evidence to back up the claim that applying these ingredients to the skin can significantly relieve pain.
- Methi (fenugreek seeds) are known for their anti-inflammatory properties when eaten, and some animal studies suggest they may help with conditions like arthritis. However, there is no clear evidence that applying them to the skin can effectively relieve pain.
- Ajwain (carom seeds) has been used in traditional medicine to relieve pain, including joint and nerve pain. Some studies suggest it may work similarly to morphine by affecting how pain is processed in the body. However, while these effects have been seen in animal studies, there is no clear proof that applying ajwain to the skin helps with pain in humans.
- Cloves contain eugenol, a compound with mild numbing effects. While it can temporarily ease dental pain and provide some relieffor mild discomfort, it’s not strong enough to offer lasting relief for other types of pain.
- Garlic, known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits, may improve health when consumed. However, there’s actually no evidence to suggest it works effectively as a topical pain remedy.
We spoke with Dr Aryan Kumar Mohanty, Senior Resident in the Department of Orthopaedics at MKCG Medical College & Hospital, Berhampur,Odisha, for his expert opinion on the use of mustard oil with spices for pain relief. He says, “While mustard oil, ajwain, methi, cloves, and garlic are used in traditional remedies, there’s no solid evidence that they can heal pain in just 10 days. Mustard oil might help temporarily ease mild pain because of its warming effect, and the other ingredients have some anti-inflammatory properties. However, they don’t treat the underlying causes of pain. If you’re dealing with ongoing or severe pain, it’s best to see a doctor for proper treatment.”
