Hyderabad: Telangana police announced that they have solved the murder of a 30-year-old woman whose body was found in a half-burnt state beyond recognition in Medchal with the arrest of a 47-year-old from Shamirpet on Monday.
Thanks to the digital payment system trail the suspect has left for the police to pick up. The suspect had purchased a condom in a pharmaceutical shop in Muneerabad. He had used a UPI app to make the payment. Based on the transaction timing, the police zeroed in on the suspect.
He was subsequently picked up by the police on Sunday and was later remanded to judicial custody on Monday.
The suspect was identified as Sheik Imam, a resident of Majeedpur village near Shamirpet, DCP Medchal N Koti Reddy told the media, in a press conference explaining how the police cracked the case.
On January 24, Medchal police received information about a half-charred woman's body being spotted near a culvert of Outer Ring Road.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman’s head had been smashed before she was set on fire. The body was moved for a post-mortem examination.
"We could not identify the deceased as her face was disfigured in the brutal attack. We found two names tattooed in both her hands. They were in English and Telugu. This helped us identify the woman," a senior police official privy to the investigation said.
