An annual light festival is in full swing in United Arab Emirates' coastal city of Sharjah, lighting up the night with colors and imagination.
Stories from Arab saga are retold with light projected to architectures. Aside from carrying the light show's tradition of projection, new elements including water parade and fireworks also give spectators a new look at this year's festival, which is being held from Feb 6-16.
"It's very beautiful. It's a very nice way to enjoy the evening in this colorful land of nice cozy weather. It's very nice. We really love this. We are residents of Sharjah, we have been witnessing this light festival for a couple of years. We do come back every year to see this festival," said Surekha Balaji, a spectator.
The Sharjah Light Festival is currently being held for 11 years in a row. The city hopes to attract more tourists with the event. The previous year the light festival has attracted over one million spectators in its 11-day run. This year Sharjah has ramped up efforts to extent light shows to 17 scenery spots across the city.
"We have a huge, huge team that helps us. We have people come in from all over the world. We got mainly people coming in from Europe. And we use things like projectors, we use lasers, we use skytrackers, we use fireworks. It's all different elements, and a huge, huge amount of elements and a lot of people working on this," said a light technician of the festival, Josh Monteath.
A favorite part of the light festival for spectators is a 30 minute performance involving creative fireworks that is staged at the Khalid Lagoon every evening between 20:30 to 21:00. Many say the highlight is fireworks shooting from a boat shaped like a Chinese dragon, which looks like the dragon is breathing fire.
"I like this dragon show because it has all the fireworks, and it looks really amazing and awesome," said one young spectator.
Firework technician Nicolas Mousques said in preparation for the firework show his team tried many animal images, not none reached the ideal effect of breathing fire. Mousques introduced that in the end it was his experience working in China gave the idea of using the image of the Chinese mythical creature.
"It was to select this dragon because it has the capacity to move on the water. And the idea of the show was like a wonderful travel in the world, and go to visit different civilization, and to bring back this light and this sensation in Sharjah to show and give to all the people," said Mousques.
