2. SOUNDBITE (English) Donald Tusk, President of the European Council: ++PART OVERLAID BY CUTAWAY++
"I can say first of all that Prime Minister May and I discussed yesterday a lot of issues, including the legal and procedural context of a potential extension. It's for me it's absolutely clear that there's no majority in the House of Commons to approve a deal. We will face an alternative, a chaotic Brexit or an extension. The less time there is until 29 March, the greater the likelihood of an extension and this is an objective fact, not our intention, not our plan, but an objective fact. I believe that in this situation we are in, an extension would be a rational solution, but Prime Minister may still believe that she is able to avoid this scenario. And I can assure you, and I did it also yesterday with my meeting with Prime Minister May, that no matter which scenario will be out the 27 (EU members minus the UK) will show maximum understanding and goodwill."

STORYLINE:
European Union official Donald Tusk added pressure on British Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday to delay the country's departure from the bloc, saying a delay would be a "rational solution."
Tusk said that "all the 27 (member states) will show maximum understanding and goodwill" to make such a postponement possible.
He was speaking after two days of talks between May and several European leaders - including Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar - at the EU-Arab League summit in the Egyptian resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.
Those talks failed to produce a breakthrough in the negotiations.
The so-called Irish backstop has been the centre of British lawmakers' objections to May's Brexit deal.
The mechanism is a provision to avoid border checks between the UK's Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland.
May wanted to change the deal to reassure British lawmakers that the backstop would only apply temporarily.
But EU leaders insisted that the Brexit withdrawal agreement, which took a year and a half to negotiate, can't be reopened.
