From Bal Gopal to Ganesha, the incarnation of Krishna to the God of prosperity, the only thing which binds them first is their fondness for sweets. And when it comes to Lord Ganesha, you simply can't think of anything other than that coconut and jaggery mixture stuffed conical-shaped sweet, the Modak. This traditional and authentic Maharashtrian steamed sweet dish is offered to Lord Ganesha as prasad or naivedyam on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. It is his immense fondness for this special sweet dish, that earned Ganesha the name, Modakpriya. In a traditional Modak recipe, the outer shell is made of rice flour and is stuffed with a coconut and jaggery mix. Then the dumplings are steamed and made ready to be offered to God. These Modaks in Marathi are also popularly known as Ukadiche Modak, ukadiche meaning steamed. The Ukadiche Modak may seem easy to make in the first place, but shaping a Modak to its perfection can be really a tricky and at times, a tedious task too. If you want to save time you can always take the help of Modak moulds available in the market and on e-commerce platforms. Nevertheless, handcrafted Modaks are always a better option to showcase your creativity.
