Not just another health condition, obesity has become a global crisis and several medical and health organizations are working towards putting an end to it. Another reason why obesity is a serious health condition is that it can be the cause of other metabolic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, etc. Therefore, every year on 26th November, Anti-Obesity Day is observed in order to bring to the knowledge of people the health hazards of obesity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity and overweight conditions result in at least 2.8 million deaths each year.

Currently, while we are struggling with the pandemic, we have adopted a sedentary lifestyle. Sitting for long hours in front of screens and binge eating has resulted in severe weight gain in many people. Apart from this, the fear of contracting the novel coronavirus has also contributed to people being restricted within the four walls, limiting their usual physical activities. After the lockdown, many people complained about becoming overweight or borderline obese. Moreover, the condition has been seen to be even more common among children.

Causes Of Obesity/Overweight

  • Genetics
  • Heredity
  • Unhealthy eating habits
  • Unhealthy lifestyle habits
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Emotional factors

Tips To Prevent Obesity

  1. Healthy Eating
Inculcate healthy eating habits instead of consuming foods and beverages high in carbs, sugar or deep-fried. A cheat day once in a while is acceptable but controlling the portion size is important. Switch to healthy snacks instead of chips, biscuits, cookies, etc., and prefer eating home-cooked meals. Avoid Overeating
  2. Regular Exercising
A daily workout of 30-45 mins is very important. Even if you are not able to step out of home, carry out physical activities at home. You can practice yoga, aerobics, spot jumping, skipping, and several other indoor physical activities.
  3. Take A Break
A sedentary lifestyle is a major cause of obesity. Therefore, instead of sitting for long hours in front of screens, take frequent breaks and stretch or walk around a little.
  4. Be Stress-Free
Stress and anxiety too can lead to being overweight or obese. Therefore, meditate, sleep well, and relax your mind to be stress-free. Also, avoid emotional eating.
  5. Do Not Hurry
You must have often heard your grandparents advising you to chew every bite 32 times. The reason behind it is that eating too fast can lead to overeating, which in turn causes weight gain. It also enhances bowel movement.
  6. Sleep Better
Sleep too can be responsible for weight gain. Lack of sleep can cause hormonal changes, increase your appetite, and cravings. Thus, maintain proper sleep hygiene.

Obesity can also affect sexual life in adults. Not just physically, but being overweight or obese can also affect a person mentally. A person may be too conscious about their body image, of being mocked in the public, or being body shamed. All this can lead to stress, depression, anxiety, and fear of stepping out in public. Therefore, even small steps towards preventing obesity like including more fruits and vegetables in your diet can be beneficial. Follow a balanced diet and a proper lifestyle to keep yourself healthy, fit, and away from other metabolic disorders.
