Though India is seen as the land of Kamasutra, inhibitions about sex still prevail on this land. Discussing sex and communicating about the problems in one’s sexual life is still a taboo for many Indian women (At least in majority parts of the country). This is why sexual dysfunction in women is not a widespread topic as that of dysfunction in males.
Interacting with Dr. Rahul Reddy, andrologist, we at ETV Sukhibhava could gather interesting information on female sexual dysfunction and its treatment.
Two types of sexual dysfunction exist in females:
- Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) and
- Orgasmic Disorder.
Women with HSDD show no interest in sexual activity. The lack of desire to have intercourse is absent. Many reasons contribute to this condition in females, of which stress and marital conflicts count as the major ones. A type of FSAD (Female Sexual Arousal Disorder) is HSDD. FSAD is where the body doesn’t respond to sexual stimulation.
While the orgasmic disorder is where a female who has a sexual desire finds it difficult to reach an orgasm. Many conditions play a role in getting this condition in females.
Causes for Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD)
The main cause could be childhood trauma (Psychological or Sexual Trauma), Hormonal Imbalance, marital conflicts, and stress. Females with this disorder show no interest to participate and lack any sexual desire.
Orgasmic disorder causes
While women with orgasmic disorder get this condition due to factors like vaginal causes, tight vagina and decreased blood supply to the vaginal tissues, lack of proper stimulation, sometimes male dysfunction (Erectile Dysfunction and Premature Ejaculation) and lack of foreplay. Sometimes psychological conditions like a lack of privacy and issues with the partner can also cause this disorder in females.
Who can get Sexual Dysfunction?
Any woman can get hypoactive sexual desire disorder while orgasmic disorder is commonly seen in women above 35 years of age and menopausal women.
Treating Sexual dysfunction in Females
“The treatment for female sexual dysfunction is not as complex as males,” says Dr. Rahul Reddy. Balancing the hormones through the right food and regular exercise, having open communication with the partner about the interests and dislikes, and the natural treatments. Medications like Flibanserin (Sex Pill) that help in sexual desire is mostly prescribed. The drug is advised to be taken for 3-4 months regularly and later it is advised on a demand basis, i.e. during the time of intercourse.
Right foreplay and a stress-free mind could be helpful to treat the orgasmic disorder in females,” Dr. Reddy concluded.
Though the treatments act as a secondary solution to treat dysfunction in females, regular exercise, and a healthy diet along with a stress-free lifestyle are the primary to achieve a healthy and happy sexual life.
