Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Priyanka Tibrewal and Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Srijib Biswas filed their nominations on Monday for Bhabanipur assembly constituency bypolls scheduled on September 30.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already filed her nominations on September 10. It should be noted that the Congress party refrained from contesting any candidate in the constituency and the state is to witness a triangular contest.

"I believe that people will be with BJP in the bypolls. I pray to god to protect people who are victims of violence. Trinamool Congress has fielded the entire state cabinet to campaign for the chief minister, but I am not bothered. The victims of political violence are with me," said Tibrewal, before filing the nomination.

State leader of opposition, Suvendu Adhikari and actor- turned- politician, Rudranil Ghosh accompanied Triberwal while she filed her nomination in Alipore Survey Building at around 12.30 pm. BJP leader Dinesh Trevidi and MP Arjun Singh were also present.

A lawyer by profession, CPI-M's Biswas, filed his nomination for his debut poll at around 11am. "People in the state are suffering. So in my campaign, I will highlight their suffering," he said, after filing his nominations.

In the 2021 West Bengal assembly polls, Trinamool Congress's Sovondeb Chattopadhyay contested from Bhabanipur and defeated BJP candidate and actor- turned- politician, Rudranil Ghosh by a margin of 28,719 votes. However, he paved way for CM Banerjee as she is required to win an Assembly seat to retain power.

CM Banerjee was defeated by BJP's Adhikari from the Nandigram assembly constituency while her party made a stunning victory in the state.
