Kolkata: Brain dead youth's organs give new lease of life to two

The vital organs of a 28-year-old brain-dead man from Kolkata gave a new life to two elderly persons. His liver was transplanted into a 48-year-old male patient from Howrah whereas the heart recipient is a 55-year-old woman from Jangalpara in Hooghly.

Kolkata: A middle-aged woman and a man got a new life through the heart and liver of a young man who was declared brain dead. The skin of the young man has also been donated.

The heart and liver of the 28-year-old donor were harvested and the transplant procedures were on till late into the night at the state-run Institute of Post Graduate and Medical Education (IPGMER).

The liver was transplanted into a 48-year-old male patient from Howrah whereas the heart recipient is a 55-year-old woman from Jangalpara in Hooghly, said doctors of IPGMER.

The deceased donor Kaustav Roy was brought to Ruby General Hospital on November 6. A patient of hypertension, the 28-year-old had suffered brain bleeding caused by burst of blood vessels.

He was attended by a multispecialty team, including neurologist, neurosurgeon, nephrologist, critical care specialist and others.

But despite all efforts, his organs started to fail and subsequently doctors diagnosed that he was brain dead.

According to the hospital sources, the family members of the donor decided to donate the organ of the young man after learning about the matter.
