Kolkata: In a startling revelation, the controversial political leader Mukul Roy claimed that he is in BJP only and had never joined Trinamool Congress. The revelation made by Roy at Dum Dum Airport after he returned from Delhi, apparently put an end to the speculation on Roy’s political affiliation.

“I went to Delhi for my own personal reason and I shall go to Delhi again if needed,” Roy said. When asked about his political affiliation, the BJP MLA from Krishnagar North assembly constituency said, “I was in BJP and I am in BJP. I have never joined Trinamool Congress. Though I didn’t meet the top BJP leaders like J P Nadda but I had a word with him. I shall again go to Delhi again”.

On April 17, Mukul Roy, a former Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, travelled to Delhi with two other individuals inviting speculation that the veteran leader might join BJP again. On Saturday, April 29, Mukul Roy returned to Kolkata and announced that he is currently with the BJP. Mukul landed at the Dum Dum airport amidst speculations about his political affiliations.

Mukul also dismissed claims made by his son Subhranshu Roy, who had filed an FIR alleging that his father had been kidnapped and taken to Delhi against his will due to his poor mental health. Mukul stated that he had gone to Delhi voluntarily and that he was completely healthy. "My son's claim is not right. I went on my own, came back on my own. No one took me by force. I am completely healthy," he said.

The political journey of Mukul Roy has been a tumultuous one, with his frequent changes in political affiliations. He had been a founding member of the TMC but had later defected to the BJP in 2017. He had played a crucial role in the BJP's rise in West Bengal and had helped the party win several seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. However, in June 2021, he rejoined the TMC, citing differences with the BJP leadership.

Mukul had won the Krishnanagar North constituency in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly Elections on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket, but had later defected to the TMC. Despite his return to the TMC, Mukul had not resigned from his MLA post, leading to legal challenges. The speaker of the assembly had not dismissed his post, and he had been appointed as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of the Legislative Assembly. However, the case of his dismissal is still pending in court.

Mukul had also faced health issues, including undergoing head surgery, which had led him to stay away from active politics for some time. However, his return to the BJP has once again brought him back into the limelight.
