Kolkata : BJP's Mithun Chakraborty's roadshow scheduled for today has been cancelled due to lack of police permission. Meanwhile, the saffron party workers staged a protest in front of Parnasree police station over denial of permission.
Chakraborty was supposed to do a roadshow today in support of Behala Paschim candidate Srabanti Chatterjee.
Veteran actor-politician Mithun Chakraborty had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — one of the key opponents of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Kolkata’s Brigade Ground on March 7.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the rest of the top party leaders are leaving no stone unturned to stir a hornet's nest in West Bengal and is challenging the TMC in several of its bastions.
The BJP has been trying to pool in members from various walks of life especially celebrities in its attempt to keep TMC on the backfoot.
Meanwhile, the TMC, headed by two-time Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is determined to stop the BJP from making inroads in West Bengal. Mithun Chakraborty was in talks with the saffron leadership for quite some time before joining the BJP.

Mithun was a Rajya Sabha MP for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for two years. He resigned from the position in 2016 citing health reasons after his name surfaced in the Saradha ponzi scam.
On April 1, a high-stakes battle was witnessed in Nandigram, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced off against her former ministerial colleague Suvendu Adhikari. Voting for 30 Assembly constituencies took place in the second phase from the districts of South 24 Parganas, Bankura and Purba Medinipur.

So far Bengal has witnessed a total of three out of eight phases of Assembly polls in the state.
The counting of votes will take place on May 2. Last time, the Assembly elections were conducted in seven phases.
