Bengal: Pharmacist held for running illegal vaccination camp

A pharmacist of the Health Department in West Bengal has been arrested for illegally running a vaccination camp in Kolkata. Two Covid vaccine vials have also been recovered from the camp.

Kolkata: A somewhat shadow of the fake COVID-19 vaccination camp run by a bogus IAS officer, Debanjan Deb was witnessed at Rupnagar in the Sonarpur area under South 24 Parganas of West Bengal. Mithun Mondal, a staff of the West Bengal Health Department, has been arrested for illegally running a vaccination camp there. Two COVID- 19 vaccine vials have also been recovered from the camp.

Police sources said that Mondal is employed as a pharmacist with Panchagram Primary Health Centre in Diamond Harbour under South 24 Parganas. At the same time, he was also the vaccine coordinator for the Mashat sub-centre. It is alleged that he has been conducting such illegal vaccination camps in different parts of the district, where he used the vaccines that he illegally procured from his workplace.

Sources said that around 40 persons were vaccinated from this illegal camp run by him. Some of them even paid cash for vaccination. On average he used to charge between Rs 300 and Rs 400 for each dose of vaccine. While some received the message relating to vaccination, some did not. That is exactly where doubts were raised about the authenticity of the camp. Now, people who got vaccinated at these camps are bit scared.

After receiving information about the illegal vaccination, the police acted swiftly and Mondal was arrested. The police have already contacted the state health department to examine whether the two COVID-19 vaccine vials recovered from the camp are genuine or not. Now, the question is that if those vaccines are found to be genuine, then how could Mondal access that. In that case, police will probe whether more staff of the health department are involved in the scam or not.

Meanwhile, those who were vaccinated at this illegal camp are quite sacred. They apprehend major health hazards if the vaccines are bogus.
