Kolkata: The internal haemorrhage in the West Bengal unit of BJP seems to be never-ending. A day after the BJP legislator from Bishnupur, Tanmay Ghosh joined Trinamool, the saffron camp lost another MLA to the state's ruling party. On Tuesday, BJP legislator from Bada assembly in North 24 Parganas district, Biswajit Das returned to Trinamool Congress.

He was greeted back to the party by the Trinamool Congress secretary-general and state commerce & industries minister, Partha Chattopadhyay. Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member from Barasat Lok Sabha constituency, Dr Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar was also present on the occasion. On Monday, BJP legislator from Bishnupur, Tanmay Ghosh joined Trinamool Congress in presence of the state education minister, Bratya Basu.

With this development, BJP's tally in the West Bengal assembly comes down to 72. In the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections, BJP managed to win from 77 assembly constituencies. But two of their sitting Lok Sabha members, Nishtih Pramanik and Jagannath Sarkar, despite winning elections for MLA posts resigned with the intention of being a Parliamentarian. The development reduced BJP's tally from 77 to 75.

The tally came down to 74 soon after a BJP legislator from Krishnagar (North) assembly constituency joined Trinamool Congress just days after the election results were announced. After Tanmoy Ghosh shifted to the state's ruling party, the tally came down to 73 and finally on Tuesday again it came down to 72, with the exit of Das.

Das, a three-time legislator, was always known as a close confidant of Mukul Roy. He was elected for Trinamool Congress from Bangaon (North) constituency in 2011 and 2016. However, after the 20118 Lok Sabha election, he toed Mukul Roy's lines and joined BJP claiming that he was feeling claustrophobic in Trinamool Congress. In the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections, he was elected from Bagda assembly constituency for BJP.

Rumours of Das's return to Trinamool Congress were there for quite some time. During the last session of the assembly, he touched the feet of the chief minister, Mamata Banerjee. Recently, he was absent from a BJP's programme in Bangaon, where the new Union ministers from the state were felicitated. Finally, on Tuesday, he joined Trinamool.

"In BJP there is absolutely no room to work for the people. So I have come back to Trinamool to be a part of the development. BJP is heading for a landslide disaster in North 24 Parganas soon," he said.
