Dehradun: It has been 20 years since India's victory at Kargil. The legends of the brave soldiers who fought in the war are sung even today. One of those brave men is Sepoy Kailash Chhetri, posted in the Gorkha regiment.
Chhetri is a resident of Selakuyi in Dehradun district of Uttrakhand. He was posted in the Daraaj sector of Jammu and Kashmir in 1998. There, he was allocated the duty of arms distribution to the fighting soldiers in between the war.
In an interview with ETV Bharat, he said: "When the Indian Army required weapons during the war, I had to cross those cliffs which were occupied by the Pakistani Army. The enemy was constantly firing from the hill and there was a deep trench on the other side of the road. This made the journey even more difficult. I decided to switch off the lights of the vehicle I was travelling in, to evade detection," he added.
He went on to say, "The soldiers were full of zeal during the course of the war. And after it was over, they had mixed emotions- one from the victory, the other from the loss of their fellow soldiers."
In the end, Chhetri raised the slogan 'Jai Hind' and requested the government to fulfil all the promises they make for martyred soldiers.
"This would be an inspiration for the younger generation aspiring to join the Army," he added.
