Pithoragarh cloud burst: Death toll reaches 14, search ops underway

As many as 14 people have died including 11 people from Tanga village and three from Gela village in Munsyari of Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh following cloud burst and landslide-led incidents due to incessant rains. SDRF and medical staff along with locals have launched search and rescue operations.

Pithoragarh: A total of 14 people have died due to cloud burst in Munsyari of Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district on Tuesday including 11 people from Tanga village and three from Gela village. The deceased in Tanga village includes six women and five men.

A search operation is underway to locate at least six missing people in Tanga village.

On Sunday night, two houses were demolished due to landslides in Gela village. In this, six members of the same family were buried alive under the debris while five people from another family managed to escape in to save their lives.

Cloud burst and heavy rains have wreaked havoc in Tanga village resulting in the destruction of five houses followed by landslides in the region.

State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) teams and medical staff have launched search operations under the guidance of the district administration.

The entire route has been hugely affected and people are facing trouble as transport is badly hit.

Tanakpur-Tawaghat highway has been shut after debris fell on the path. Mobile networks and telecom services are also affected and rescue teams are also facing difficulties in carrying out the relief operation.

Five houses were damaged and livestock was washed away in Chhoribagar village in Uttarakhand after heavy monsoon rains poured throughout Saturday night and Gori river also overflowed.

In a press statement, Uttarakhand CMO said, "Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Rawat has instructed Pithoragarh District Magistrate that there should not be any laxity in relief and rescue work. He has also asked to provide relief amount to the affected people. 2 teams of SDRF are engaged in relief and rescue operations."

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls over Uttarakhand and other northern states during the next few days.

Earlier in 2019, people of Tanga village saved their lives by relocating themselves in the forests during the monsoon. Following this, people demanded rehabilitation but due to the alleged delay in the process, they are forced to suffer this year as well.

Last week, a cloudburst and heavy rains wreaked havoc in Kansari village in the Kedarnath valley.

In 2013, a multi-day cloudburst centred on Uttarakhand caused devastating floods and landslides killing more than 1000 people. Flash flood came down upon the overflowing banks of the Chorabari lake destroying numerous houses and everything else that came its way. The incident left behind a huge trail of destruction.
