Nainital: The rapid climate change in Central Himalayan regions is now impacting higher Himalayan region also due to which glaciers in Kumaun's Pachachuli are melting at an alarming rate, which may prove to be a major threat in the coming times.
According to local people, in the last 20 years, about 60 feet of glaciers have melted.
Prof. BS Kotlia from Kumaon University said that climate change is eating away Himalayan glaciers at a dramatic rate.
He added that glaciers are melting rapidly in many regions of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. At the same time, glaciers in Jammu and Kashmir and its surrounding areas are shrinking. In such a situation, it is necessary to study microclimates at those places.
Dharchula resident, Ravi Dattala said that glaciers in the Panchachuli region have shrunk by more than 60 percent. The melting speed of glaciers is rapid. At the same time, the number of trees on the foothills of glaciers is also increasing, due to which the snow is melting during the snowfall in the Himalayan region, which is a big threat to the glaciers in the coming time.
Mountaineers trekking in the glaciers and Himalayan region of Uttarakhand said that such results are being seen due to the pressure of increasing vehicles on the roads and changes in the environment.
The movement of vehicles towards the high Himalayan regions has increased. Since then, the snow in the Himalayas has started to blacken and the glaciers are rapidly shrinking. If the glaciers continue to melt, then these beautiful snow-covered mountain ranges will become snow-less in the coming years.
BS Kotlia said that according to the recent study, the melting of glaciers of Uttarakhand and Himachal has increased in the last 400 years. Glaciers of Kashmir are shrinking rapidly as well, due to which the climate of the three regions has varied. It is very important to study this phenomenon, if micro studies are not done on them in time, we may have to pay a big price in future.
