5 Indian navy mountaineers missing after avalanche hits climbing group

Five mountaineers of the Indian Navy went missing in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, after an avalanche struck them during the expedition trip on Friday morning, said an official.

Chamoli: Five mountaineers of the Indian Navy went missing in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, after an avalanche struck them during the expedition trip on Friday morning, said an official.

The mountaineering team of the Indian Navy was climbing Mount Trishul, a Himalayan peak in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, where these kind of incidents happen frequently.

The rescue team from Nehru Mountaineering Institute under the leadership of Principal Colonel Amit Bisht has left for Mountain Trishul. The team had left from the Ghat area of ​​Chamoli, as per sources.

Colonel Amit Bisht, Principal of Nehru Mountaineering Institute, said that the 20-member expedition was flagged off from Mumbai on September 3. Ten climbers, who had started their approach to reach the summit, were caught in an avalanche short of the summit.

Spokesperson of the Indian Navy took Twitter to inform about the situation. The Tweet reads, "IndianNavy mountaineering expedition to Mt Trishul, Uttarakhand caught in an avalanche near the summit today. All out efforts for Search and Rescue (SAR) being progressed by the ground team and helicopters from #IndianArmy, IndianAirForce & State Disaster Response Force."

"The 20 member expedition was flagged off from Mumbai on 03 Sep 21. Ten climbers had started their climb to the summit this morning but were caught in an avalanche short of the summit. While 5 of the 10 are safe SAR for remaining 5 is in progress," it further added.
