COVID-19: Varanasi jail inmates make masks, sanitisers

With the rise in the number of coronavirus cases across the country, prisoners of Varanasi district jail have taken up the initiative to prepare masks and hand sanitisers using natural resources available in the jail.

Varanasi: The inmates of Varanasi district jail, serving prison term for heinous crimes are contributing to the fight against coronavirus by way of making masks and hand sanitisers using natural resources, an official said on Wednesday.

According to Bibi Pandey, jailor, District Jail, there are more than 1,800 prisoners and most of them have been contributing their work to fight the pandemic. Besides masks, they are also making hand sanitisers keeping the scientific parameters in focus.

"The sanitizer is made up of complete natural resources available in the jail. After plucking leaves of neem trees, these are mixed with aloe vera and other flowers found in the garden which is then boiled. Thereafter the spirit is added to the mixture in order to obtain the hand sanitizer. Further, the jail authorities are planning to send these products out so that people in need could be helped," the Jailer added.

He also said, "Our effort is to see that the prisoners keep themselves healthy in times of coronavirus crisis." However Uttar Pradesh has recorded 1,296 coronavirus confirmed cases with 20 fatalities reported so far.
