Mortal remains of Unnao rape victim reach her village

The post-mortem of the Unnao rape victim took place at the Safdarjung Hospital and the mortal remains have reached her village in Unnao. After battling for life at Delhi's Safdarjung hospital, the Unnao Rape victim who was set ablaze while on her way to a court hearing on Thursday morning died at 11:40 pm on Friday.

On Thursday, the 23-year-old Unnao rape victim was airlifted from Lucknow's SMC government hospital to Safdarjung Hospital.

According to the police, five miscreants allegedly threw kerosene on the woman and set her ablaze when she was on her way to a local court for the hearing of a rape case she had filed.

Notably, the woman had filed a rape case in March this year, which is under a trial at a local court in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao.

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced Rs 25 lakh as compensation to the family of Unnao's rape victim who was set ablaze and also decided to set up a fast track court for the speedy trial of the case.

Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Swami Prasad Maurya visited the victim's family here on Saturday along with his colleague Kamal Rani and Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj.

"Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has decided to constitute a fast track court so that accused in the case are brought to justice at the earliest. The Chief Minister has decided to give Rs 25 lakh as compensation to the family of the deceased from the CM's fund. The cheque will reach the victim's family by today evening," said Maurya.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday expressed grief over the death of the Unnao rape victim. He said that the government will try to punish the accused as soon as possible by taking the matter to a fast track court.

The Chief Minister, in a statement, said: "The incident is very sad and unfortunate" and expressed his condolences to the family of the victim.

The victim, who had sustained over 90 per cent burns, was airlifted from Lucknow to Delhi late on Thursday evening and remained conscious till nine o'clock in the night. The doctors left no stone unturned to keep her conscious but she could not be saved.

Dr. Shalabh Kumar, chairman of the burns and plastics department at Safdarjung Hospital, said: "72 hours of onset are very important in such incidents. If only three days had gone well, the victim could have been saved. However, Unnao's daughter struggled for 44 hours."

Informing about the post mortem of the Unnao rape victim who passed away last night, Dr Sunil Gupta, Medical Superintendent, Safdarjung Hospital said, "No indication of poisoning and suffocation was found on the body during post-mortem. Autopsy reveals that the victim died due to the extensive burn injuries."

The body of the Unnao rape victim is being taken to her village in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh by road, the family said.

An ambulance carrying the body left Safdurjung Hospital in Delhi a short while ago, after the completion of the post-mortem.

Dr Sunil Gupta, Medical Superintendent, Safdarjung Hospital informed that the post mortem of the victim will take place at 10 am today under the leadership of Dr MK Wahi, Head of Department of Forensic unit.

He added that the Uttar Pradesh Police and Delhi Police are completing their paper work and will not be part of the forensic procedure.

New Delhi: After battling for life at Delhi's Safdarjung hospital, the Unnao Rape victim who was set ablaze while on her way to a court hearing on Thursday morning, died at 11:40 pm on Friday.

"Despite our best efforts, she did not survive," said Dr Shalab Kumar, Head of Burns and Plastic Surgery Department at the hospital.

"Her condition deteriorated towards the evening. She had a cardiac arrest around 11:10 pm. We tried to resuscitate her, but she passed away around 11:40 pm," he said.

After her death, the victim's body was transferred to the hospital's forensic department where a post mortem examination will be conducted, following which her body will be handed over to her family. The post mortem reports will be given to the police, hospital sources were quoted by a news agency.

The woman was set afire by five men, including two of her alleged rapists, on Thursday morning when she was going to Rae Bareli to attend a court hearing in the rape case filed by her.

She died on the day the four accused in the gang rape and murder case of a veterinary doctor in Hyderabad were killed in an 'encounter' with the Telangana police, triggering a tsunami of reactions across the spectrum -- ranging from appreciation to condemnation.

The Unnao rape victim had suffered more than 90 per cent burns and was airlifted to Delhi after being shifted from a local hospital to Lucknow.

The Delhi Traffic Police had provided a "green corridor" for hindrance-free movement of the ambulance carrying her from the airport to the hospital.

One of the two men accused of raping her last year was granted bail 10 days back. The other man had been on the run. All the five men involved in the Thursday morning attack were arrested within hours of the crime.

In a tweet, the Uttar Pradesh police had said the victim had lodged an FIR alleging that she had been raped between January 19 and December 12, 2018, by one of the accused on the pretext that he would marry her.

The accused was arrested then and got out on bail on November 25, police said. They had added that the probe into the incident is being conducted in a scientific manner and the circumstantial evidence being collected.

In a chilling recap, the woman had said in her statement to Sub Divisional Magistrate Dayashankar Pathak that she was attacked when she reached Gaura turn near her home.

Harishankar Trivedi, Ram Kishore Trivedi, Umesh Bajpai, Shivam Trivedi and Shubham Trivedi set her afire, she had said.

She alleged that Shivam and Shubham Trivedi had abducted and raped her in December 2018. The FIR, however, was registered in March.
