12 dead, 24 injured as tractor-trolley falls into Garra river in Uttar Pradesh

Official sources said that the the death toll is likely to increase as several people have suffered grievous injuries in the accident and undergoing treatment in critical condition.

12 dead, 24 injured as tractor-trolley falls into Garra river in Uttar Pradesh

Shahjahanpur (UP): As many as 12 people died and 24 were injured in a road accident in Shahjahanpur of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. Official sources said that the incident took place near Birsing village under the Tilhar police station area.

Speaking to reporters. SP Anand Kumar said that a group of people had come to take water from the Garra River for a religious program in Azampur village. He also said that they came in two tractor trolleys adding that while returning, the drivers of the two tractor-trolleys started racing with each other. " In a bid to overtake the other tractor trolley one of the drivers lost control of his vehicle and it fell into the Garra River from the bridge after ramming through the railing," he added.

Police sources said that there were 42 passengers on board the tractor trolley which fell into the river. Locals informed the police and started the rescue operation. Kotwali in-charge Rajkumar Sharma rushed to the spot and sent the injured to CHC by ambulance.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath has expressed grief over the accident and instructed government officials to ensure that the injured get proper medical attention. Taking to Twitter the Chief Minister described the incident as "extremely sad" adding that administrative officers have been instructed to conduct relief and rescue work on a war footing. He also said that government officials have been instructed to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured.

"The loss of lives in the accident in district Shahjahanpur is extremely sad. My condolences are with the bereaved families. Administrative officers have been instructed to conduct relief and rescue work on a war footing and for proper treatment of the injured. Praying to Lord Shri Ram for speedy recovery of the injured," tweeted Adityanath. The Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the next of keen of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
