New Delhi: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday wrote to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, seeking permission to press 1,000 buses into service to transport the labourers safely.
In a letter to the UP chief minister, Priyanka said that the Congress party will bear the cost of the buses at a time when the migrants are finding it tough to reach homes safely.
The Congress leader wrote in her letter, "Lacks of migrant workers are moving back to Uttar Pradesh from various parts of the country. Even after the repeated announcements of the Government, proper arrangements are not being made to take these migrant workers back to their home state. Till now, 65 migrant workers have lost their lives in road accidents which is greater in the number of deaths in the state from COVID-19."
While mentioning about the plight of migrant workers, Priyanka Gandhi said, "Fulfilling our responsibility towards the poor and destitute migrants, Congress wants to run 500 buses at Ghazipur border, Ghaziabad and 500 at Noida border."
"We cannot leave these nation builders to fend for themselves at such times. Indian National Congress is always committed to helping them. I hope you'll cooperate in this attempt," the letter read.
Meanwhile, CM Adityanath also issued strict directions to all district magistrates and collectors to ensure no migrant labourers walk down to their homes or take any unsafe mode of transportation, including trucks.
Earlier today, Priyanka Gandhi also hit out at the state government over the Auraiya accident, in which 24 migrant labourers lost their lives, saying that it has again raised the question as to why the government is not facilitating the migrant labourers journey to their home.
