Modi to be first PM to address AMU in last 56 years

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had accepted an invitation to address the centenary celebrations on December 22. The event will be held online. He will be the first prime minister to address an AMU event since Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1964.

Aligarh: After Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shashtri, Narendra Modi will be the third Prime Minister to address at the centenary celebrations of the Aligarh Muslim University.

Modi will address the celebrations via video link on December 22 and he will be the first PM to address an AMU event since Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1964.

Along with him, Union Education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal would also be present there.

He will be speaking to the university and its members for the first time. The PM is also expected to release a commemorative stamp on AMU’s centenary year during the interaction.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Assistant Member Incharge of Public Relations Department of AMU, Rahat Abrar said," Lal Bahadur Shastri came for the last time while serving as the Prime Minister. Many important people have also come as former Prime Minister, including Manmohan Singh, Indra Kumar Gujral, Vishwanath Pratap Singh but for the first time after Shashtri Ji, Modi will address the centenary celebrations here."

"It is the fortune of the university that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address as the Chief Guest at the centenary celebrations on 22 December. Although there are no programs in the university during the Corona period, webinars and online programs are being organized," he said.

Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College became Aligarh Muslim University on December 1, 1920, following a gazette notification. AMU was formally inaugurated as a university on December 17 that year.
