Sambhal (Uttar Pradesh): A man walked into a police station in Uttar Pradesh wearing a placard around his neck that said, "I am afraid of Sambhal police. I admit my mistakes. I am surrendering. Please do not shoot me."

This happened at Nakhasa police station on Sunday, when the history-sheeter identified as Naeem surrendered. He carried the placard to ensure he was not shot dead in an encounter. The man who was booked under Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-social Activities Prevention Act was carrying a bounty of Rs. 15,000 on his head.

Station House Officer Dharampal Singh said this is not the first time that a criminal has surrendered before the police with a placard seeking mercy. Criminals have surrendered in a similar manner in Amroha and Kanpur, too.

In all the three occasions, the criminals brought along local media persons to ensure their safety. Following the Bikru incident in Kanpur in which six members of the Vikas Dubey gang were killed in encounters, criminals are relying on placards and media tactics.
