Mahoba: The district administration here sprayed chemicals on a swarm of locusts, spread over half-a-kilometre, killing lakhs of them, officials said on Monday.
The swarm attacked Mahoba on Sunday evening after invading Banda district.
Only 10 per cent of the agriculture fields had vegetables, therefore they settled on trees, district agriculture officer Veer Pratap Singh said.
On Sunday evening, the swarm attacked a garden in Kamalkhera village.
"As soon as the news of the locusts reaching the village came, officials of the agriculture department sprayed chemicals through a fire tender, following which lakhs of locusts were killed. Some locusts died in the rain itself," Singh said.
The official said some small swarms of locusts are still hovering around and the administration and farmers are fully alert.
District agriculture officer, Hamirpur, Saras Kumar Tiwari said, "Going by the direction of the wind, it seems that the swarm of locusts are heading towards Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh. Adequate chemicals have been arranged to tackle with the locusts and the farmers told to remain alert,"
