Kanpur Encounter: Criminals took advantage of height to ambush police team, says IG

After eight police personnel lost their lives when a gang of criminals opened fire on them in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur, Mohit Agarwal, IG Kanpur Range, said that criminals got the advantage of height as they were firing from the rooftop. Two criminals were also killed, though the rest, including Dubey, managed to escape.

Kanpur (UP): Eight police personnel were killed in the wee hours of Friday as they attempted to arrest a criminal with 60 cases listed against him since 1993.

The incident took place in Bikaru village which falls under Kanpur’s Chaubeypur block.

In the indiscriminate firing that followed, with the criminals having an advantage as they were at a height, eight policemen lost their lives while four were grievously injured.

Two criminals were also killed, though the rest, including Dubey, managed to escape.

Around 1 am on June 3, a police team, including a deputy superintendent of police and an inspector, surrounded the home of Vikas Dubey, a history-sheeter whose many crimes include the murder of a BJP leader Santosh Shukla inside a police station.

JCBs had also been placed some distance from the house, forcing the team to get down from its vehicles.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Mohit Agarwal, IG Kanpur Range, said that criminals got the advantage of height as they were firing from the rooftop.

He further said, "Vikas Dubey had received a tip-off hours before the police raid. Following which, he called his henchmen who later ambushed the police team as it approached the gangster's house to arrest him."

It is to be noted that more than 25 teams have been formed by the UP Police to nab Dubey who is yet to be apprehended.
