UP: Contradictory statements of state officials over floating dead bodies in Ganga

In a row of the dead bodies found floating in the Ganga amid the ongoing second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the officials of the state are giving contradictory answers on being asked about the matter.

Ghazipur (Uttar Pradesh): In a row of the dead bodies found floating in the Ganga amid the ongoing second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the officials of the state are giving inadvertent answers on being asked about the matter.

On being asked about the number of dead bodies, the District Magistrate of Ghazipur Mangala Prasad Singh said, "Only one corpse has been found in the Ganga, whose last rites have been performed by law."

Whereas, according to the SDM of Seorai, Ramesh Kumar Maurya, at least 25 dead bodies have been recovered from Ganga between 11:00 am to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, and most of the bodies were half-burned or decayed.

According to the reports, the villages which are based on the banks of Ganga are troubled due to the smell of the floating dead bodies.

At least 96 unidentified bodies – many of them decomposed and bloated – have been found floating in the Ganga over the past couple of days, triggering fears among local residents in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh that bodies of Covid victims were being dumped in the river. While 71 of the bodies have been fished out in Bihar’s Buxar district, at least 25 bodies were found in neighboring Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district.
