Bulandshahr: NCW demands swift probe into death of 20-yr-old student

National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma wrote to the Uttar Pradesh Police chief asking him to ensure a swift, fair and thorough investigation into the death of a 20-year-old student in Bulandshahr. NCW has also asked for an action-taken report at the earliest.

New Delhi: The National Commission of Women (NCW) on Tuesday asked the Uttar Pradesh Police to ensure a swift, fair, and thorough probe into the death of a 20-year-old woman in a road accident in Bulandshahr district.

The commission took cognisance of the issue immediately after it came across several twitter posts regarding the death of the 20-year-old woman from Western Uttar Pradesh who topped in her class 12 board exams in 2018 and then went on to receive a full-time scholarship at a prestigious university in the United States.

NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma wrote to Uttar Pradesh DGP HC Awasthy and asked him to ensure a swift, fair, and thorough investigation in the matter.

"Considering the gravity of the matter, it is requested that CCTV footage may be checked and also ensure swift, a fair and thorough investigation be done in the matter," the commission said.

The chairperson also demanded that a detailed action-taken report reflecting the true nature of the incident be sent to the commission at the earliest.

Sudiksha Bhati, who was on a visit home from the US where she studied, died in a road accident on Monday morning. Her family members said she had come to India due to the coronavirus pandemic and was scheduled to go back to the US on August 20.

They also alleged that while going to her maternal uncle, she was being harassed by the two unidentified persons during the ride which led to the accident, prompting Bulandshahr district administration to order a probe.
