Telangana Minister launches 'STREE' to support, empower women

Telangana Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali on Saturday launched "She Triumphs through Respect, Equality, Empowerment (STREE)"- a programme that empowers women by involving them, organised by Hyderabad city security council (HSBC) in association with city police.

Hyderabad: Telangana Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali on Saturday launched "She Triumphs through Respect, Equality, Empowerment (STREE)" organised by Hyderabad city security council (HSBC) in association with city police at Taramati Baramati, Ramdev Guda, Ibrahim Bagh here.

STREE is inspired by the theme of this year's International Women’s day-EachforEqual.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that the objective of this programme is to facilitate a joint forum for women and police to work together on issues of safety and security of women and girls.

According to police, the focus is to bring the police and community together to work towards women empowerment. The STREE groups shall be formed at the community level, escalating as Sabala Shakthi groups at the Station House Officer level.

The HCSC women’s forum shall act as a core group to provide inputs to Sabala Shakthi groups. A periodical interface will take place at the senior police officers and the Commissioner level to review the working of the Sabala groups and enable the STREE groups to work effectively and also ensure the safety and security of women.

The initiative which works at the ground level, not only involves educating women of their rights, entitlements, laws and support systems available, but also has provisions to enhance their leadership skills. Following which, they will know whom to approach and how to approach in case they face any atrocities.

Apart from identifying local issues that affect women's security-at home and outside it, the initiative aims at implementing necessary measures to restore it and make the area safe for the females.

Interestingly, workshops will be conducted for developing skills in women to instil confidence in them, thereby keeping them away from any kind of oppression and self-defence training sessions will also be carried out to make them know techniques, that will help them to protect themselves from all forms of violence.

The initiative that briefly summarises as- 'for the women, by the women and of the women' intents to make females realise their capabilities, choose the life they want to live in and to keep them open to possibilities.
