Hyderabad: Battered by heavy rains and flash floods twice during the last one week, Hyderabad and its surroundings are likely to see another spell of intense rainfall as the weather office forecast more downpour on Sunday.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely to occur in many parts of the city and at times, there could be intense spells in one or two places of the city, said the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre.

It issued a yellow warning. Water pooling on roads and low-lying areas in many/most places is likely. The expected impact also includes traffic congestion at most locations, wet and slippery roads, tree and electric poles falling, electricity/ water supply disruptions and other social disturbances for a few hours and drainage clogging.

It suggested restricted movement for people, and that the necessary advisories may be issued by the Municipal Corporation for displaying the warnings and necessary action for clearing the water, and by the Road, Rail and Traffic Department for traffic regulation.

Response force may be advised to take necessary action. Electricity and Water Departments may also be so advised, it added.

It also issued an impact-based heavy rainfall warning for Telangana. Rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over the state. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are very likely to occur at isolated places, the Meteorological Centre said.

Heavy to very heavy rain is also very likely on Monday.

For the second time in less than a week, Hyderabad and outskirts witnessed heavy rains on Saturday night. The downpour inundated several low-lying areas. Two persons were killed in rain-related incidents.

The city and surroundings were battered by torrential rains on October 13-14. About 50 people were killed in the rains and flash floods.

Meanwhile, according to the Amaravati Meteorological Centre, the cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh coast persists and extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.

Under its influence, a low-pressure area is very likely to develop over the same region during the next 24 hours. It is likely to become more marked during the subsequent 24 hours.

Thunderstorms along with lightning are likely to occur at isolated places in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.

Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in East Godavari, West Godavari, Yanam, Prakasam, Nellore, Chittoor and Kadapa districts.

Rains again disrupt traffic on highways connecting Hyderabad

Heavy rains and flash floods in and around Hyderabad have again affected the movement of traffic on various highways.

For the second time in less than a week, the highways connecting Hyderabad to Vijayawada, Bengaluru and Warangal were damaged, bringing vehicular traffic to a halt.

Even before the authorities could fully repair and restore the roads damaged due to the torrential rains and flash floods of October 13-14, a fresh spell of heavy rains battered the roads in the city and outskirts on Saturday night.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway after a stretch of the road was damaged at Inamguda on the city outskirts. Police said the Lashkar Guda lake overflowed after the heavy rains, inundating the highway.

The authorities took up the emergency repair of the damaged highway and regulated the traffic.

Meanwhile, the Hyderabad-Bengaluru highway was again damaged at Gaganpahad, affecting the movement of vehicles on the road which also connects the city to the Hyderabad International Airport at Shamshabad.

Water from overflowing lakes in the area inundated and damaged the highway. Cyberabad Police appealed to people going to the airport to use Outer Ring Road (ORR).

Vehicles coming from Kurnool and Bengaluru are also being diverted to take the ORR at Tondupally.

The rains also affected the movement of vehicles on the Hyderabad-Warangal highway. Police were diverting vehicles coming to Hyderabad from Warangal and Yadadri Bhuvangiri through the ORR at Ghatkesar.

Within the city, police have closed some roads for traffic or imposed restrictions due to the inundation and damage. The Malakpet Road Under Bridge, Ganndianaram-Shiva Ganga road, Moosarambagh causeway, Chaderghat causeway, Puranapul 100 feet road, Bandlaguda road and Falaknuma Road Over Bridge were shut for traffic.
