"They suddenly took out a country-made weapon and tried to open fire and also threw acid on policemen. The police opened fire in self-defence, killing all the three accused," Sajjanar was quoted by reports.
The police action came in the wake of huge public outcry over the acid attack, and Sajjanar instantly earned the title of an "encounter specialist".
Key role in killing of top Naxal in 2016
Pertinently, Sajjanar also played a crucial role in the encounter killing of Notorious Maoist renegade Mohammed Nayeemuddin in August, 2016 at Shadnagar. At the time, Sajjanar was serving as the IG Special Intelligence Branch that dealt with Naxals. The killing of Nayeem was believed to have brought relief to several businessmen as he was accused of extortion.
