Hyderabad: Ranchakonda police has adopted 41 orphanages and old age homes amid COVID-19 lockdown. The police will distribute groceries and other essentials to these homes during the lockdown to help them get through the crisis.

Pointing out that old-age and orphan homes for the differently-abled depend on the services of kind-hearted people in the society, Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said, "Since they themselves cannot venture out during the lockdown, we decided to adopt these homes on behalf of Rachakonda Police."

As part of the initiative, LB Nagar DCP Sunpreet Singh and Malkajgiri DCP Rakshita K Murthy verified and furnished the list of homes in their respective zones which required rations, medicines and safety equipment, which the managements could not acquire due to the lockdown.

Bhagwat also directed the local Station House Officers (SHO) to assess the requirement of each of these homes and the report was furnished to him.

"Our Citizen Volunteer Cell is managing the procurement and distribution of food, ration and other relief material. The cell maps the donors to the homes and ensures that all that is necessary is supplied to them,” said Bhagwat, who himself distributed groceries at the Matrudevobhava old age home, Ruchita Charitable Trust, Bharati Memorial Foundation. He has been personally ensuring that their needs are fulfilled.

The Commissioner said they had so far identified and adopted 41 orphanages, old age homes and homes for the differently-abled, altogether housing about 1,630 residents.

"Thirty of these homes have been supplied with groceries and medicines as required and the remaining 11 homes were awaiting donors and would soon be supplied with the requisite material," he added.

Apart from the police, NGOs like Ramakrishna Math, Freemasons, organizations like Genpact, individuals like Brigadier Agarwal, Maheshwar Reddy, Jasper, Dr Nandini and Kaushik among others have come forward to join hands with the Rachakonda Police for arranging supplies.
