Mahbubnagar (Telangana): A couple was killed after a toll gate structure collapsed at the Gunnanur area under Midjil Mandal police limits in Telangana's Mahbubnagar district on Saturday.
The deceased couple has been identified as Donka Krishna and his wife Pushpa of the same locality.
According to sources, the couple was trying to dry paddy on the Mahabubnagar-Kodad highway toll gate. Suddenly, thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rain lashed the area and a huge portion of the tollgate collapsed and fell on them.
While one died on the spot, the other was buried under the debris of collapsed iron structure.
On being informed local police along with fire services personnel reached the spot, carried out a rescue operation, and sent the bodies for an autopsy, sources said.
The incident triggered tension at the Gunnanur area as locals staged a protest demanding compensation to the deceased family. The district administration deployed police in the area to thwart any untoward incident, sources said.
Meanwhile, Lakshma Reddy, the local MLA declared ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 to the family members of the deceased couple, sources added.
