TN court grants bail to anti-liquor activist Nandhini and her father

An anti-liquor-activist from Tamil Nadu Nandhini and her father Anandan were granted court by Tirupattur judicial magistrate court on Tuesday. They were arrested for contempt of court on the orders of the Judicial Magistrate court.

Madurai (Tamil Nadu): Anti-liquor activist Nandhini and her father Anandan were granted bail by the Tirupattur judicial magistrate court in Madurai on Tuesday. The bail was granted when they were taken to the court for an extension of remand.

Nandhini and Anandan were arrested on June 27 for contempt of court, on the orders of the Judicial Magistrate court. They were remanded and lodged in Madurai central jail.

The court ordered her arrest on June 27, when she had appeared in court in relation to a case dating back to 2014.

As per the details of the case, Nandhini and Anandan had protested in front of a TASMAC outlet in 2014 and distributed pamphlets in Tirupattur bus stand.

They had also allegedly staged a dharna when the police had told them to distribute pamphlets without disturbing the public.

The police had booked the duo on charges of abusing the police and preventing public servants from discharging their duties.

Nandhini, who has been an anti-liquor activist since her school days, was supposed to get married on July 5. Her arrest and subsequent remand, within days of her impending wedding, caused social media outrage which led to #ReleaseNandhini trending on June 28 and 29.

After she was remanded, the magistrate offered to release the duo on bail, if they produced sureties.

Sivaganga: Young ant-liquor activist Nandini and his father Anandhan have been released on bail by Thirupattur Court.



Nandini, a law student from Thirupattur in Sivaganga district in Tamilnadu. She and her father Anandan have been protesting against sale of liqour in escepially in State-run TASMAC.The anti-liquor crussaders were arrested on different occassions. 



IN 2014, when police interrupted their protest, Nandini allegedly opposed and argued with them. For this, a case was registered against Nadini on charges of obstruction of official duty.



In a hearing of the case in Thirupattur Court, Nandhi shooted out a question to the Judge, "Whether Liquor a food or medicine? If it is a drug, liquor selling govt is a culprit.



This triggerd the court to sanction a 'Contempt of Court' charge on Nandhini, her father and order a 15 day judicial remand (till July 9) Following this, Nandhi and her father were jailed in Madurai Central Jail. It should be noted, Nandhini's wedding was sechedules for july 5.



This created furore on social media, with Nitizens demanding release of the duo. Infact, Last week #ReleaseNandini hashtag was a trending on twitter. 



Today both Nandini and her father appeared in the same court for bail. Judge Samundeeswari granted them bail but advised Nandhini, that her protest against liquor was right, but the way she took was all wrong.
