Chennai: A convict in the assassination of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Nalini Sriharan attempted suicide on Monday, her lawyer informed.
She has been lodged in Vellore jail for the last 29 years.
It is the first such attempt by Sriharan over the years.
When asked about this incident to her lawyer, Pugalenthi said, "Nalini was involved in an argument with another inmate in jail. The matter further escalated and it was taken to the jail authority, following which, she tried to hang herself."
Pugalenthi also said, "The prison guard stopped her from committing suicide. No serious injury was caused in the incident and Nalini is safe."
The advocate further demanded an enquiry into the matter.
"We want an inquiry into it as she never showed such an attitude during her 30-year incarceration. We request CM to move her to Puzhal prison. She isn't safe in Vellore prison," he said.
Seven persons including Nalini Sriharan and her husband were convicted for the murder of Rajiv Gandhi.
Besides the two, five others were sentenced to death in connection with the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi at nearby Sriperumbudur by an LTTE suicide bomber during an election rally in May 1991.
The sentence was commuted to life imprisonment later. Murugan is lodged in the Central Prison in Vellore while Nalini at the nearby special jail for women.
