Tirupathur (Tamil Nadu): In a first, the general public will be able to nominate the 'cop of the week' in the recently carved Tirupathur district in Tamil Nadu.

A notification to this effect was issued by P. Vijayakumar, Superintendent of Police, Tirupathur introducing a 'Cop of the Week' award which was aimed at motivating the constabulary.

As per the notification, recommendations can be sent to a mobile number that has been set up for this purpose.

Superiors in khakis and members of the public as well can send short videos of the police personnel who they feel deserve to be acknowledged for their service.

Based on the recommendations, one policeman or policewoman would be chosen and honoured with a token cash purse, a certificate, and a book.

This weekly exercise would happen on Monday.

According to the top brass of the district police, the police strength in the district is about 800.

Special-sub-inspectors in the service are at the top in the hierarchy chain in the eligibility list to receive this recognition. Other eligible ranks are head-constable, grade II, and grade I.

The recommendations can be sent to the mobile number -- 9486242428.

"Members of the public are also welcome to send short videos of the good work done by police personnel. This is a method followed by professional organisations to improve efficiency of their staff. We follow it in the police department as well," said a senior official.

"The yardstick for selection would include providing support in the arrest of an accused in an important case, handling petitions, assisting in maintenance of station records and getting appreciated by the public for performing his/her duty well, among others. Inspectors and DSPs were tasked to recommend the name of performing constables under this frame work earlier.

We have expanded the scope of recommendation to members of public as they would be a better judge since they would be the ones get impacted first hand. This does not discourage the respective personnel from recommending their own names," the official added.
