Protests continue against CAA in Hyderabad

Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) by different organisations continued peacefully in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Raising slogans against the Narendra Modi government, a group of people staged a protest at Santosh Nagar here holding placards that read Boycott CAA and NRC, Stop Burning India, India vs BJP among others.

Some shops and a few business establishments near the historic Charminar remained shut with the owners observing silent protest against CAA and the National Register of
Citizens (NRC) and voluntarily downing shutters.
Some pushcart vendors also joined them in the protest, police said adding the agitations in the city were peaceful.

Members of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee's Minorities wing also held a dharna against the CAA.

The protesters held placards that read No CAA and No NRC, Save Constitution and Save Democracy, We Reject CAA & NRC and raised slogans.

They also demanded that Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Raobreak his silence on the matter. 

The ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi has opposed the amendment bill in Parliament.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Raja Singh on Saturday applied for police permission to hold a public meeting in support of CAA on December 28 from 10 AM to 10 PM at the NTR Stadium here. 

Protests are being held by different organisations, including that of students and political parties, in the city against the CAA for the past several days.

Kamal Haasan's party extends support to DMK's anti-CAA rally

Actor Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has extended its support to an anti-citizenship law rally called by the DMK in Chennai on Monday.

MNM general secretaries Arunachalam and Souri Rajan visited DMK headquarters -- Arivalayam -- to announce their party's support to the rally.

"We met MK Stalin at DMK headquarters and extended support for the rally, which is planned on December 23 against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)," Souri Rajan told reporters.

However, he did not disclose whether the MNM will participate in the rally. "Our party high command will take a call on it. We will release a statement soon," the MNM leader said.

The DMK's rally has the support of its allies including Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) among other parties.

The rally was announced by Stalin after meeting leaders of allies earlier this week.

Stalin has attacked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami for supporting the CAA, stating that Palaniswami was ready to follow whatever Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah would say.

"Palaniswami's party AIADMK and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) have supported the CAA. The people will not forget their act. The Chief Minister is ready to implement whatever Modi and Amit Shah say," said Stalin.

The rally will add to the swelling nationwide protests, which turned violent at several places, against the CAA which grants citizenship to Hindu refugees of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, who arrived in India until December 31, 2014.

Anti-CAA protest: Police use water cannons against Cong workers in Kozhikode

Police on Saturday used water cannons to disperse a large number of Congress workers, who had gathered to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. A clash broke out between the Congress workers and the police after the protestors tried to enter the Head Post Office Complex.

On Friday night, members of Kerala Students' Union (KSU) blocked the movement of buses belonging to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) at Peroorkada junction, during the protest against the CAA. The Parliament recently passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 last week, which became an Act after receiving assent from President Ram Nath Kovind.

Since then, protests have erupted in various parts of the country over the new citizenship law. The Act seeks to grant Indian citizenship to Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, and Parsi refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

Protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was held by Muslims in several places in Tamil Nadu on Saturday.

In Puducherry, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy said the amended law will not be implemented in the Union Territory.

In Madurai, several hundred Muslims held a protest and shouted slogans against the CAA.

Similarly, protests by Muslims were held in Nagapattinam and Myladuthurai. Several shops owned by Muslims were closed as a protest against CAA.

In the state capital, Chennai members of Left parties held a protest outside the Central Railway Station against CAA.

The Left parties also led a procession towards Raj Bhavan.

Karnataka: Curfew to be relaxed in Mangaluru during day-time

Amid raging protests against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act in the state, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Saturday stated that the curfew in Bengaluru will be relaxed during day-time today, while Section 144 will be implemented in Mangaluru from December, 23.

"The curfew will be relaxed from 3 pm to 6 pm in Mangaluru today, while the night curfew will continue. The curfew will also be relaxed during day-time tomorrow, and section 144 will be imposed from 23rd December," said Yediyurappa.

Earlier this week, two people were killed in the alleged police firing after protests against the new citizenship law turned violent in Mangaluru.

The notice was issued to Siddaramaiah by the city police which stated disruption of "law and order situation" as a reason for barring him.

Earlier today, Siddaramaiah took to Twitter and said, "Police have issued a notice to me that read I am prohibited from entering Mangaluru. We are living in an undeclared emergency situation."

"The chief minister should insist Prime Minister Narendra Modi to at least declare an emergency officially and run 'Tuglaq Darbar' as they wish," he added.

The CAA grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.

Earlier, Mangalore Police Commissioner issued a notice to former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in connection with his visit to Mangaluru. The notice stated that his entry in the city may lead to law and order situations.
