Tamil Nadu holds annual 'jallikattu' event

Jallikattu or wild bull-taming sport is held annually as part of the harvest festival of Pongal in Tamil Nadu. About 58 people including bullfighters and spectators suffered injuries at the main event near the city of Madurai.

Madurai: At least 58 people, including spectators, were injured at the annual jallikattu event held near Madurai in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, police said.

The bull-taming sport is conducted as part of the harvest festival Pongal at Avaniyapuram. More than 500 bulls took part in the event, organisers said.

The injured included spectators and sportsmen, police said.

The event, inaugurated by state Cooperation Minister Sellur K Raju, was held following COVID-19 guidelines.
