Rajasthan: CRPF jawan cremated with military honours in Sikar

The mortal remains of CRPF jawan Deepchand Verma, who was killed in an encounter with militants in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore district, were consigned to flames at his native place in Rajasthan's Sikar district on Thursday. Verma died while saving a three-year-old boy.

Sikar: Head constable Deepchand Verma of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), who was killed in a terrorist attack at Sopore in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, was cremated with full military honours here on Thursday.

Verma died while saving a three-year-old boy. His eight-year-old son, Vineet, lit the funeral pyre in the district's Bawdi village.

Earlier, the mortal remains of the jawan reached Reengus from where he was taken to his native village.

Teary-eyed family members and locals raised patriotic slogans as they bid their final adieu to Verma.

The 39-year-old Verma had joined the CRPF on March 4, 2003, and was posted as head-constable in Jammu and Kashmir for the last one year. He had married in 2004. The slain head constable is survived by his wife and three children.

MP Sumedhanand Saraswati, Minister of State for Education Govind Singh Dotasara, Khandela MLA Mahadev Singh, former MLA Banshidhar Bajia, Collector Yagya Mitra Singh Dev and many public representatives, administrative officers and hundreds of villagers attended the last rites.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot condoled Verma's death.

According to the CRPF, at around 7:30 am on Wednesday, 179 Battalion of CRPF reached Model Town Chowk Sopore for patrolling duties. As the troops were de-bussing from the vehicles to occupy their respective spots of deployment, terrorists hiding in the attic of a nearby mosque started firing indiscriminately on the troops, in which CRPF jawans constable Bhoya Rajesh, Head Constable Deep Chand Verma, Nilesh Chawde and Constable Deepak Patil got injured.

Later Deep Chand succumbed to his injuries.
