11 cops convicted in Raja Maan Singh killing case after 35 years

The district court in Mathura convicted 11 police personnel in Raja Maan Singh encounter case. Raja Mansingh was killed in a police encounter in Bharatpur, thirty-five years ago. The quantum of punishment for the convicted police personnel will be announced on Wednesday.

Mathura: The district court in Mathura, on Tuesday, delivered a verdict on an incident of 1985, convicting 11 police personnel for an encounter in which Raja Mansingh was killed in Bharatpur, Rajasthan.

The quantum of punishment for the convicted police personnel will be announced on Wednesday.

Raja Mansingh was killed in a police encounter in Bharatpur, thirty-five years ago.

A day before the encounter, he had banged his jeep into stationary helicopter of then Rajasthan chief minister.

The case dates back to February 21, 1985, when Raja Maan Singh along with two other people - Sumer Singh and Hari Singh - were killed in police firing. Raja Maan Singh was an independent candidate from Deeg assembly constituency in Rajasthan and was campaigning for the same when the incident took place.

Raja Maan Singh's son-in-law Vijay Singh had got an FIR registered in Deeg police station about the case. Few days before the incident, an FIR against Raja Maan Singh was lodged in the same police station for allegedly hitting and destroying the helicopter of the then chief minister, Shivcharan Mathur.

The Supreme Court had transferred the case to Mathura from Rajasthan.
