Kandhamal (Odisha): An exchange of fire took place between the security forces and CPI (Maoist) cadres at Gochhapada Bireni forest in Kandhamal district on Sunday. Meanwhile, police have detained an ultra and started questioning at Kandhamal SP office.
Acting on reliable input, a joint team of SOG and DVF had launched an anti-Naxalite operation near Bireni village under Gochhapada PS. The team was on operation when Maoists opened fire on the security personnel.
Following this, police immediately took cover and asked Maoists to surrender themselves. In order to save themselves, the cops fired in a controlled manner.
Eight to 10 left-wing extremists managed to escape from the spot. Taking advantage of the dense jungle and difficult terrain, Naxals escaped from the spot. The escaped cadres are believed to the members of the KKBN division of the Maoists, sources said.
The security personnel also arrested a militia and his involvement will be examined and necessary legal action will be taken against him, sources added.
