46% MLAs in Odisha have criminal cases: ADR

According to the report prepared by Odisha Election Watch (OEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), 46 per cent of the newly elected legislators in Odisha face criminal cases.

New Delhi: About 46 per cent of the newly elected legislators in Odisha face criminal cases, said a report on Monday.

As many as 67 of the 146 members of the 16th Odisha Assembly have declared criminal cases in their affidavits, said the report prepared by Odisha Election Watch (OEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

According to ADR, 49 MLAs have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to murder, attempt to murder and kidnapping against them.

Of the MLAs with serious criminal cases, two have cases related to murder and 11 have declared attempt to murder cases against them, the report said.

Among the major parties in Odisha, 46 (41%) out of 112 MLAs from BJD, 14 (61%) out of 23 MLAs from BJP and 6 (67%) out of 9 MLAs from the Congress have declared criminal cases against themselves while 33 (30%) out of 112 MLAs from BJD, 10 (44%) out of 23 MLAs from BJP and 5 (56%) out of 9 MLAs from Congress have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Of the 146 newly elected MLAs, 95(65%) are crorepatis while out of 147 MLAs analysed during 2014 assembly polls, 76 (52%) MLAs were crorepatis.

The average of assets per MLA in Odisha 2019 assembly elections is Rs 4.41 crore.

Intro:New Delhi: As many as 67 (46%) of 146 MLAs of 16th Odisha Assembly are facing criminal charges, according to a report by election watchdog Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Odisha Election Watch (OEW).

According to ADR, 49 MLAs have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to murder, attempt to murder and kidnapping. Among them 2 MLAs have declared cases related to murder while 11 MLAs have declared cases related to attempt to murder.

The ADR and OEW have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 146 MLAs of 2019 out of 147 in the Odisha Assembly.

Congress candidate Ramesh Chandra Jena who won from Sanakhemundi constituency has declared 51 criminal cases against himself, including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, extortion, etc.

Two MLAs have declared cases related to murder while 11 MLAs have declared cases related to murder.
