Mumbai: A crew member of 'The Kerala Story' received a threatening message from an unknown number, the Mumbai Police said. Sudipto Sen, the director of the film which has run into controversy for its unrealistic claims informed the police about this incident.

"The message threatened the said person not to step out alone from home and that they didn't do a good thing by showing the story," the police said. The Mumbai Police provided security to the crew member. However, FIR has not been registered as they are yet to receive a written complaint.

Meanwhile, the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government banned the film citing "maintenance of peace" and to avoid incidents of "hatred and violence" in the state on Monday making it the first state in the country to do so.

Mamata Banerjee said, "It is to avoid any incident of hatred and violence, and maintain peace in the state." She has directed the state chief secretary to remove the movie from all theatres where it is being screened. Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the producer said they will pursue legal options against Mamata's step. The film evoked sharp opposition from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan as well who called it "RSS propaganda".

'The Kerala Story' narrates the ordeal of three women who are trafficked to ISIS camps after being converted to Islam through marriage. The movie has led to polarisation by BJP ever since Narendra Modi mentioned it in his campaign. The movie has also been made tax-free in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

'The Kerala Story' stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in lead roles. It was released in theatres on May 5.
