Pune (Maharashtra): In a tragic road accident, eight people, including four of a family, were killed after a speeding pickup vehicle collided with an auto-rickshaw in Maharashtra's Pune district, police said on Monday. Police are examining the CCTV footage of the accident spot.
The accident took place at around 11.30 pm on Sunday under Otur police station limits on Kalyan-Ahmednagar Road, located about 150 km from here, they said. The pick-up vehicle, which was going towards Kalyan in Thane district from Ahmednagar, collided with the auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction near a petrol pump at Pimpalgaon Joga, an official said. Seven persons from the auto-rickshaw and the pickup vehicle's driver were killed, he said.
The deceased four of a family included two children aged four and six years and hailed from Junnar in Pune. They were the pickup van's driver Ganesh Maskare (30), his wife Komal Maskare (25), son Harshad (4) and daughter Kavya (6). This apart, another passenger of pickup vehicle, Amol Mukunda Thokhe from Jalna also died in the accident.
The remaining three deceased included the driver of the auto-rickshaw and two passengers. Their identifies are yet to be revealed. All eight bodies have been shifted to Otur hospital for post-mortem.
According to police, the vegetable-laden pickup vehicle was travelling from Otur to Kalyan while the Otur-bound auto-rickshaw was heading from the opposite direction. The accident occurred when the two vehicles reached in front of the petrol pump near Nagar Kalyan Highway Road on the border of Dingore and Pimpalgaon Joga village.
"We have identified five of the eight deceased and process is on to identify the remaining three. The case is being investigated," an official said.
On getting information about the incident, Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Kandge of Otur Police Station and his team reached the spot and initiated the rescue operation.
