Praise and concern for Maharashtra line woman on social media

There were mixed reactions on social media to the video of a line woman climbing a pole in Beed. While one group lauded her efforts at easing people's lives amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the other criticised her for blatant negligence of her own safety.

Beed (Maharashtra): A video of a woman electrician climbing an electric pole without safety gear to restore power supply in Maharashtra's Beed district has gone viral on social media.

While on one hand, people lauded the efforts Ushga Jagdale at helping people amid the pandemic, on the other, she is being criticised for the blatant negligence of her own safety.

Jagdale is employed at the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company as a line woman.

Born in a family of farmers in Ashti area of Beed district, she is no stranger to struggles.

Unable to pursue studies because of her family's financial condition, she was married off at an early age. After her marriage, she supported her husband in his dairy business.

However, Jagdale was a physically agile person and was good at sports. Hence, she was appointed as an engineer at MSEDC.

She has been working tirelessly for the people in recent months.

State-run All India Radio also praised her in a tweet.

“Ever heard of a woman climbing electric poles, fixing snapped wire? Usha Jagdale working in #Maharashtra's Beed is an exception in a male-dominated profession. By addressing the grievances of consumers effectively she ensured uninterrupted power supply during #lockdown," it had tweeted.
