Amravati: Five people were killed while two others were seriously injured in Amravati of Maharashtra on Sunday after a building collapsed in the city's Prabhat Chowk area. The incident took place at 1:30 pm when some workers were working at a shop on the ground floor of the building.
"The building located in Prabhat Chowk area of the city collapsed, killing five persons and injuring two others," Amravati Police Commissioner Dr. Arti Singh said.
After receiving the information, a team from the municipal administration reached the spot and started a rescue operation. All the bodies were subsequently retrieved. Amravati MP Navneet Rana, former mayor Milind Chimote, Vilas Ingole and Congress city president Bablu Shekhawat reached the spot afterward.
A civic official noted that the building had been served a demolition notice in July this year due to its dilapidated condition.
"...The Divisional Commissioner has been ordered to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the incident. I offer my heartfelt condolences to those who lost their lives in this incident. We all share in the grief of his family. Chief Minister Eknathrao Shinde has decided to give Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund" Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said in a tweet, adding that the administration would take up responsibility for the treatment of the injured.
